How India's BLDC Motor Manufacturing Industry Grew Into a UAV Supply Chain

Five years ago, a UAV startup in Bengaluru needed 200 brushless DC motors for a pilot agricultural spray program. They could not source them domestically at the quality level required for commercial operation. The motors they needed had to be imported from China. Lead times were six to eight weeks. Minimum order quantities were set for export customers, not for domestic startups. The experience was common enough to have a name in the industry: the India BLDC gap. That gap has narrowed significantly. The combination of defense indigenization policy, the production-linked incentive scheme for drone components, and genuine investment from Indian engineering companies in BLDC motor manufacturing has built a domestic supply chain that did not meaningfully exist in 2019. The Real Challenge That Drove Change India's UAV industry was expanding faster than the domestic component supply chain could support it. Every commercial UAV operator and OEM sourcing BLDC motors was either import...
